On July 21, 2003, Pennsylvania lost its most picturesque and awe-inspiring historic landmark. During restoration efforts, an F-1 tornado tore through the Allegheny National Forest and destroyed 11 of the 20 steel towers of the Kinzua Viaduct at Kinzua Bridge State Park, McKean County. For 121 years, this breathtaking span stood as the most magnificent example of Pennsylvania's industrial heritage and a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who built this state and this nation. We request that the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the governmental agencies of the United States of America take all the necessary steps to build the partnership and fund the funding to repair and restore the Kinzua Viaduct, a National Civil Engineering Landmark. We believe that to do otherwise would be a disservice not only to history but to future generations who will never experience this tangible link to our past. If the people of this Commonwealth had the creativity and will to build the Kinzua Viaduct in the 1800s, surely we have enough of those qualities in 2003 to restore this historic gem.
